Rookie Magic: Kiki Iriafen Shines as Surprise All-Star

Rookie forward Kiki Iriafen of the Washington Mystics is basking in the excitement of being named an All-Star in her first WNBA season. Reflecting on how improbable this achievement seemed to her just three months ago, Iriafen expressed her disbelief, stating she would have found the idea laughable at that time. Following a celebratory moment with teammates highlighted by hugs and cake, she acknowledged the honor of being recognized as an All-Star, especially alongside fellow rookie Sonia Citron, marking the first time in 26 years that rookie teammates have received this accolade.

Iriafen’s performance has been a significant factor in her recognition. As she stepped onto the court for 18 games this season, she has averaged 12.3 points, 8.3 rebounds per game, and contributed to the team with her on-court vision. Her impressive five double-doubles, particularly four within her initial five games, have showcased her talent; her scoring and rebounding ranks her among the best rookies in the league.

Selected as the WNBA Rookie of the Month in May, Iriafen’s versatility as a 6-foot-3 forward has made her a valuable asset for the rebuilding Mystics team, which currently sits at an 8-10 record. She has proven her mettle against top-tier forwards, displaying skills that have drawn admiration from coaches and players alike.

Mystics coach Sydney Johnson praised Iriafen’s performance against some of the league’s best, reinforcing her status as a respected player within the league. Moreover, out of 487,035 All-Star fan votes, she ranked 11th, highlighting her growing popularity among fans.

Joining her as an All-Star is teammate Sonia Citron, the third pick in the draft, who has also impressed with her scoring average of 14.6 points and 4.9 rebounds. Citron expressed how special it is to share this experience with Iriafen, noting their growth together, both as players and friends.

This season marks a turnaround for the Mystics, particularly in comparison to last year’s challenging start. With a strong combination of young talent and veteran leadership, the team aims to defy expectations and build on their current successes.

Overall, Iriafen’s story is a testament to the power of teamwork and support, proving that even in a challenging league, individuals can rise and shine remarkably.
