Rookie Cooper Flagg Leaning on Kyrie Irving as Mavericks Seek a Turnaround

Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg is finding his footing as he learns from star player Kyrie Irving amidst a challenging season for the team. The Mavericks fell 133-127 to the Los Angeles Clippers, marking another tough night for the franchise, which is experiencing increased scrutiny following the recent firing of general manager Nico Harrison.

In the game against the Clippers, Flagg scored 16 points, shooting 61.5 percent from the field, alongside five rebounds, but also faced struggles with four turnovers and no assists. As he adapts to his new role as point guard, Flagg is eagerly soaking up insights from Irving, who is currently sidelined due to a torn ACL. Flagg described Irving as an “ultimate player-coach,” commending his deep knowledge of the game and unique perspective on basketball.

“I think he’s one of the ultimate player-coaches,” Flagg stated. “He has so much knowledge about the game. I’m trying to pick his brain and learn from him at a high level.”

Assuming the primary point guard position as a rookie certainly comes with its challenges. Flagg candidly acknowledged the weight of responsibility that this role entails, admitting that he initially felt unprepared for it. However, he remains optimistic about improving and contributing to the team’s offensive strategies.

“It’s a lot of pressure and responsibility that comes with being a point guard,” Flagg said. “I tried my best, and that’s not to say I can’t go back to it and can’t work on it and get better.”

Throughout his first 13 games, Flagg has averaged 15.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, with a shooting percentage of 43.6 from the field and 26.9 from three-point range. As the Mavericks prepare to face the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday, Flagg’s growth, paired with Irving’s mentorship, could prove pivotal in turning the team’s fortunes around.
