FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Aaron Rodgers has expressed his desire for Haason Reddick to remain with the New York Jets as the star edge rusher seeks a trade.
“Obviously, we’d love for him to be here, but we don’t judge him for trying to do what’s best for him,” Rodgers commented. He emphasized that he believes Reddick’s best option is to be a Jet, highlighting the exciting journey ahead. However, he acknowledged that Reddick must prioritize what is best for himself and his family.
Reddick’s holdout has now extended to 22 days as he pushes for a new contract, and he officially requested a trade from the Jets on Monday. In response, New York general manager Joe Douglas stated that the team has no intentions of trading Reddick. Coach Robert Saleh also declined to comment further, reinforcing Douglas’ message.
Rodgers, who has been in the league for 20 years, voiced his support for Reddick amid the uncertainty. While he does not know Reddick personally, he indicated he may reach out to him during this contractual dispute.
Saleh mentioned he has been in touch with Reddick but did not specify when they last communicated. He remains optimistic about Reddick joining the team when he is ready, stating that the team would welcome him with open arms.
Reddick, who has recorded double-digit sacks for four consecutive seasons, is seen as a crucial asset for the Jets’ pass rush, especially after the departures of Bryce Huff and John Franklin-Myers. The Jets had traded with Philadelphia under the assumption that Reddick would report and discuss his contract upon arrival.
Currently on the reserve/did not report list since July 25, Reddick is set to earn $14.25 million in base salary this season, though he risks accumulating fines exceeding $1 million due to his absence. He also forfeited a $250,000 workout bonus for skipping offseason workouts, and none of his salary is guaranteed.
Despite the holdout, Saleh assured that it hasn’t distracted the team.
In other news, tight end Jeremy Ruckert is sidelined with a concussion. The Jets recently completed their longest practice of training camp, lasting nearly 2.5 hours, and Saleh noted that the team is in good shape as they prepare for the upcoming season opener against San Francisco on September 9.
