Rockstar Games is facing scrutiny over allegations of union-busting after the dismissal of 31 employees, a situation that has caught the attention of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The firings took place in October and were linked to the workers’ involvement in a private trade union chat group on Discord. Rockstar claims the terminations were due to “gross misconduct,” alleging that the employees shared confidential information outside the company.

However, this characterization has been challenged by the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB), which labeled the incident as “the most blatant and ruthless act of union busting in the history of the games industry.” Following the dismissals, IWGB filed legal claims against Rockstar, sparking a wave of support from over 200 employees at Rockstar North who signed a letter denouncing the firings and urging the company to reinstate the affected workers. Protests took place outside Rockstar North’s headquarters in Edinburgh and in various cities including Paris, London, and New York.

One of the fired employees, who chose to remain anonymous, described the actions of Rockstar as “a blatant, unapologetic act of vicious union busting.” The employee emphasized the critical role that skilled personnel play in game development, underscoring the importance of protecting workers’ rights in the industry.

Chris Murray, the MP for Edinburgh East and Musselburgh, has been vocal in parliament about his concerns regarding the dismissal process at Rockstar. After a recent meeting with the company, Murray stated that he remained unconvinced that the dismissals adhered to UK employment law, noting that he was not provided with satisfactory explanations for the immediate firings of the employees. Additionally, he pointed out that Rockstar initially required MPs to sign a non-disclosure agreement to gain entry to their meeting.

In response to Murray’s concerns, Starmer called the situation “deeply concerning,” asserting the importance of workers’ rights to join trade unions without facing repercussions. He committed to ensuring that the government would investigate the matter further and keep Murray informed of any developments.

As this situation continues to unfold, it highlights the ongoing struggle for fair labor practices in the gaming industry. The drive towards strengthening workers’ rights and supporting unionization efforts may foster a more equitable environment for employees in the long term.
