Luke Rockhold has expressed skepticism regarding the upcoming interim lightweight title fight at UFC 324, which features Paddy Pimblett and Justin Gaethje. During a recent interview on Submission Radio, the former UFC middleweight champion conveyed his belief that this match is more geared towards boosting Pimblett’s profile rather than establishing a worthy champion.
Rockhold criticized the concept of interim titles, arguing they lack significance, particularly for established fighters like Gaethje. He stated, “I think they’re trying to do anything they can to put little Paddy into a title situation. I’m annoyed with fighters that think the interim title means anything. You see guys like Justin Gaethje, and he knows it. None of that s*** really means much to him because he wants to be a real champion.”
According to Rockhold, Gaethje’s outlook starkly contrasts that of Pimblett, who he feels is overly optimistic about the significance of the interim belt. “Then you’ve got Paddy, who’s already talking like, ‘I’m going to be champion,’ this and that,” Rockhold remarked. “Like it’s already there. Like this fight and that belt actually mean something. Come on. They’re doing anything they can to give Paddy the best matchup he can to be a champion, to bring that love back to the UK.”
Rockhold pointed out Arman Tsarukyan as a fighter who presents a more formidable challenge in the lightweight division, highlighting Tsarukyan’s recent grappling achievements. He described Tsarukyan as a “beast” and emphasized that his grappling skills and performance in MMA make him a significant contender. “Look what he’s doing in grappling right now and how he’s just destroying these guys. That’s not easy,” Rockhold noted, adding, “And then how he’s translated it to fighting…he’s a problem for everybody.”
As the bout approaches, Rockhold’s critique of the interim title and recognition of rising talents like Tsarukyan bring added perspective to the expectations surrounding UFC 324. Fans and analysts alike may be keen to see how this pivotal fight unfolds and whether it truly establishes a path to meaningful championship contention in the lightweight division.
