The Houston Rockets have finalized a trade, sending forward Cam Whitmore to the Washington Wizards in exchange for two second-round picks. This deal was reported by Shams Charania of ESPN and adds strategic depth to both teams as they navigate their current rosters.
Whitmore, who was born in Maryland and turns 21 soon, was picked 20th overall by the Rockets in the 2023 NBA Draft. At the time, his selection was considered a significant value, as he was anticipated to be a top-10 talent. Standing 6’7″, he has shown potential as a scorer off the bench, averaging 10.8 points and 3.4 rebounds in 17.4 minutes over 98 games during his first two seasons. However, he struggled to secure a consistent role within a deep Rockets lineup.
Recently, the Rockets sought to find a new opportunity for Whitmore, believing that a fresh start with the Wizards—who are in a rebuilding phase—could provide him with the minutes he needs to develop further. The Wizards aim to build around young talents and are set to utilize their cap exceptions to accommodate Whitmore’s $3.54 million salary effectively.
In moving Whitmore, the Rockets also gain flexibility under the first-apron hard cap, especially as they prepare for transactions involving major players like Kevin Durant and Clint Capela. The picks acquired will be the Chicago Bulls’ second-round pick in 2026 and the Sacramento Kings’ second-round pick in 2029.
Additionally, the Wizards have until October 31 of this year to make a decision on Whitmore’s $5.46 million team option for the 2026-27 season. Should they opt to extend this, he would be eligible for a rookie scale extension a year down the line.
Before finalizing the deal with Washington, teams like Chicago and Denver had shown interest in Whitmore, indicating a broader recognition of his potential within the league.
This trade seems to foster a sense of hope as both young teams look to develop their rosters, providing Whitmore with a new platform to showcase his talents. The Wizards’ commitment to these younger players might yield exciting results in the upcoming seasons.
