Rock Wood Fired Pizza Closes Six of Seven Locations, Only Auburn Remains Open

The Rock Wood Fired Pizza, a beloved pizza chain that originated in Tacoma, Washington, has announced the impending closure of six out of its seven locations due to ongoing economic challenges in the restaurant sector. The announcement was made through a heartfelt Facebook post, revealing that the restaurants in Renton, Covington, Federal Way, Puyallup, Tacoma, and Lacey will cease operations, leaving only the Auburn location open to continue serving its loyal customer base.

Co-founder Don Bellis explained that the decision to close was largely driven by rising minimum wage laws, increasing commodity costs, and soaring rents. These financial pressures have made it increasingly difficult for the restaurants to sustain their operations, leading to this unfortunate but necessary choice.

Founded in 1995 by Don Bellis and Jay Gigandet, The Rock Wood Fired Pizza was initially named The Wedge, inspired by a quaint wood-fired pizza restaurant in a small coastal town in New England. Over the years, it has transformed into a restaurant that is not just about food, but an experience steeped in a Rock ‘n’ Roll theme, complete with a vibrant atmosphere and a menu featuring items named after iconic songs and bands.

The restaurant’s decor is a tribute to rock music, adorned with memorabilia and images of famous musicians, while its menu categorizes offerings into creatively themed segments like “Opening Acts,” “Main Stage,” and “Bonus Acts.” Signature items include the Free Bird Sandwich and the Stairway to Heaven specialty sauce, drawing fans to the restaurant for both food and the overall experience.

The Rock expanded successfully, managing to open locations across Washington, Oregon, Colorado, and Texas at its peak. However, as market conditions have changed, the brand has narrowly focused back to just seven locations in Western Washington.

Despite the challenges it faces, The Rock Wood Fired Pizza has actively engaged in local community causes, cementing its connection with the patrons it has served for decades. While the closures mark a somber chapter, the legacy of The Rock—its music-infused atmosphere and dedication to the community—will undoubtedly be cherished by its many fans in the Tacoma area. This poignant moment serves as a reminder of the resilience of community-centered businesses in the face of adversity, hoping to inspire future endeavors.
