Mick Ralphs, the co-founding guitarist of iconic rock bands Bad Company and Mott the Hoople, has passed away at the age of 81. The announcement was made on Monday, June 23, through Bad Company’s official social media channels, confirming the sad news to fans and the music community.
Ralphs leaves behind his partner, Susie Chavasse, and three step-children. The details surrounding the cause of his death have not yet been disclosed.
Paul Rodgers, Bad Company’s lead vocalist, paid heartfelt tribute to Ralphs, expressing his sorrow in a statement: “Our Mick has passed, my heart just hit the ground. He has left us with exceptional songs and memories,” emphasizing Ralphs’ role not just as a guitarist but as a close friend and songwriting partner. Rodgers recalled their last conversation filled with laughter, highlighting the enduring memories they created together.
Drummer Simon Kirke also honored Ralphs, calling him “a dear friend, a wonderful songwriter, and an exceptional guitarist.” He conveyed the band’s collective grief, stating, “We will miss him deeply.”
Ralphs’ passing comes just two months after Bad Company was honored by being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025—a recognition that the band deemed a fitting tribute to their enduring influence in the music industry. The induction ceremony is set to take place on November 8.
Bad Company made a significant mark in rock history with their self-titled debut album in 1974, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Their hit single “Can’t Get Enough” reached No. 5, marking it as their highest-charting song to date. Mott the Hoople, with Ralphs, is fondly remembered for the David Bowie-penned anthem “All the Young Dudes,” which peaked at No. 37 in November 1972.
Ralphs’ contributions to both bands have left an indelible mark on rock music, and his legacy as a talented guitarist and songwriter will continue to resonate with fans for generations to come.
