Rock Legend Jack Russell of Great White Passes Away at 63

Jack Russell, a founding member of the 1980s rock band Great White, has passed away at the age of 63. His family shared the news on social media, stating that he died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. Russell’s death was attributed to Lewy body dementia and multiple system atrophy, as confirmed by his memoir co-author, K.L. Doty.

In a heartfelt statement, Russell’s family reflected on his vibrant personality and significant contributions to rock music, asking for privacy during this difficult time. Russell had previously announced in July that he would be stepping back from touring due to his health issues, expressing gratitude for the love and support he received over the years.

This summer, he released his memoir titled “The True Tale of Mista Bone: A Rock and Roll Narrative” in collaboration with Doty. A public memorial for him will be announced later.

Born in Montebello, California, Russell was the lead vocalist of Great White, known for their hit songs “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” and “The Angel Song” during the late 1980s. He co-founded the band in 1982, releasing notable albums such as “Once Bitten” and “Twice Shy.”

In an Instagram post, Great White expressed their condolences for Russell, celebrating his remarkable talent and contributions to rock music. The band reflected on their shared journey and the immense joy of performing together, acknowledging his dedication and excellence in both studio recordings and live performances.

Russell’s legacy is also intertwined with the tragic Station nightclub fire in 2003, which claimed 100 lives, including guitarist Ty Longley. The fire broke out during a Great White concert, ignited by pyrotechnics. Although Russell faced no charges, he and the band settled a lawsuit with the fire’s victims.

After various lineup changes and health struggles, Russell and Great White briefly reunited in 2006 before parting ways again in 2009. While Russell pursued a solo career, Kendall continues to tour with a rotating group of vocalists under the Great White name.

This story was further updated to confirm the cause of Russell’s death and to include a statement from Great White regarding his passing.
