Jack Russell, a founding member of the 1980s band Great White, has passed away at the age of 63. His family shared the news in a social media post on Thursday, revealing that he died peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Russell’s cause of death was confirmed as Lewy body dementia and multiple system atrophy by K.L. Doty, his memoir co-author.
In the family’s statement, they highlighted Russell’s humor, zest for life, and significant contributions to rock music, saying, “His legacy will forever thrive.” They requested privacy during this difficult time.
In July, Russell had announced that he would be stepping back from touring due to his health issues, stating that he could no longer perform at the level he wished. He expressed gratitude for the memories and support he received throughout his career and released a memoir titled “The True Tale of Mista Bone: A Rock and Roll Narrative” over the summer.
A public memorial for Russell will be scheduled at a later time.
Born in Montebello, California, Russell was the lead vocalist of Great White, known for hits like “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” and “The Angel Song” during the late 1980s. He co-founded the band in 1982 with Mark Kendall and released several albums, including “Once Bitten” and “Twice Shy.”
Great White publicly expressed their condolences for Russell through an Instagram post, commending his incredible voice and referring to him as “one of rock’s biggest champions.” The band reflected on their shared journey, stating, “What do you say about someone who was there by your side on such an amazing journey?” They praised Russell for his work ethic and consistency in live performances.
Following a hiatus from Great White, Russell briefly pursued a solo career before reuniting with the band under the name “Jack Russell’s Great White.” His name is also associated with the tragic Station nightclub fire in 2003, which claimed 100 lives during a Great White performance. Russell later spoke of his desire to release a documentary about the event, expressing remorse for what happened.
While Russell faced legal challenges regarding the fire, he eventually settled a lawsuit with the victims. Great White and Russell reunited in 2006 but parted ways again in 2009 due to Russell’s health issues stemming from addiction. Despite these challenges, Kendall has continued to tour with a version of Great White that features different vocalists, gaining attention for performances during the Covid-19 pandemic without adhering to social distancing measures.
This article was updated on August 16 to include confirmation of Russell’s cause of death and Great White’s statement regarding his passing.
