ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Merry Christmas! As we enjoy a green holiday today, all eyes are on tomorrow, where a significant weather shift is expected. Widespread snowfall is set to impact travel plans across the region.

Today’s temperatures are forecasted to reach the mid to upper 30s under mostly cloudy skies, with a slight northerly breeze potentially igniting some flurries near the Finger Lakes in the afternoon. However, overall, the weather will remain dry throughout the day. Tonight, temperatures will dip into the upper teens, maintaining those cloudy conditions.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, an Alberta Clipper system is poised to bring colder weather and extensive cloud cover. If you plan to travel, it is advised to do so in the morning hours. Snowfall is anticipated to begin in the afternoon, becoming heaviest during the late afternoon and early evening. There remains some uncertainty regarding the total snowfall amounts due to the system’s placement, which may feature smaller, intense bands of snow embedded within broader snowfall areas. The storm is trending slightly more northerly, which could push the region closer to areas of sleet or freezing rain, potentially reducing snowfall totals. Nonetheless, sleet and freezing rain are primarily expected to affect only the southern tier and the southern edges of the Finger Lakes.

With expected temperatures in the low to mid 20s, the snow will likely be lighter and fluffier, although areas further southwest may experience wetter, heavier snow due to the anticipated sleet and freezing rain transition. Currently, Rochester is projected to receive around half a foot of snow, although this could be adjusted as forecasts are updated.

Travel on Saturday looks promising, and most of Sunday is also favorable. However, the weather will take a turn late Sunday with rain incoming, followed by dropping temperatures leading to snow on Monday. Gusty winds and the potential for lake-effect snow will follow on Monday and Tuesday.

Stay tuned for ongoing updates regarding tomorrow’s snowfall, as changes to the forecast may develop over the coming hours.
