Robert Plant and Suzi Dian Bring Saving Grace to NPR’s Tiny Desk

Robert Plant and Suzi Dian delivered an enthralling performance of songs from their recently released album, “Saving Grace,” at NPR’s Tiny Desk. The duo was accompanied by four talented musicians who brought an array of instruments including guitar, cello, drums, banjo, and cuatro, with Dian adding her accordion to the mix. The creative arrangement allowed for a rich sound that effortlessly filled the cozy space.

During the performance, Plant humorously engaged with the audience, referencing his past experiences at live shows. “This is just like Live Aid,” he joked, alluding to the challenge of hearing himself among the energetic atmosphere. The setlist beautifully highlighted the album’s blend of folk music and thoughtful covers, featuring a stirring interpretation of Low’s “Everybody’s Song” and Moby Grape’s “It’s a Beautiful Day Today.” Plant notably introduced the latter with an enthusiastic tribute to the San Francisco psychedelic rock group.

Closing the performance was a rendition of “Gallows Pole,” a classic folk song that Plant originally performed on Led Zeppelin III. Reflecting on his long history with the song, he mused, “I’ve been singing that since God knows when,” and shared a playful moment about the challenges of using a microphone during the set.

In a recent feature with Rolling Stone, Plant expressed his admiration for Low’s music, particularly noting the compelling nature of their live performances. He described “Everybody’s Song” as particularly captivating, highlighting it as the third track from Low’s “The Great Destroyer” that he has chosen to cover.

The full setlist included:

1. “Gospel Plough”
2. “Higher Rock”
3. “Everybody’s Song”
4. “It’s a Beautiful Day Today”
5. “Gallows Pole”

This performance not only showcased Plant’s enduring musical talents but also reinforced the lasting impact of collaboration in creating engaging live music experiences.
