Fans of Robbie Williams are getting their first look at an unusual biopic titled “Better Man,” which tells the story of the singer’s rise to fame through the unique portrayal of him as a CGI monkey. Set to be released on Boxing Day in the UK, the film is directed by Michael Gracey, known for his work on “The Greatest Showman,” which became a massive success grossing $435 million.
“Better Man” chronicles Williams’ journey from a tumultuous childhood to achieving fame as a member of the boy band Take That and later as a solo artist. Williams, who has topped the UK charts with 11 of his 12 studio albums and holds the record for the most Brit Awards with 13, sees his struggles depicted in the film, including his battles with addiction and challenging behavior.
The movie has already premiered at the Telluride and Toronto film festivals, receiving positive feedback. The Guardian’s Benjamin Lee praised the film, noting that what initially seemed like a quirky gimmick turned out to be a compelling portrayal of Williams’ life. He highlighted the combination of Gracey’s vibrant directing style and the film’s candid representation of Williams.
Featuring Williams’ voiceover, the trailer showcases Gracey’s talent for creating musical sequences, including an elaborate scene under Christmas lights on Regent Street in London, alongside a playful approach to profanity that is characteristic of Williams.
Other publications, including Variety, have echoed the positive reception, emphasizing the film’s unique angle that sets it apart from typical biographical portrayals of pop stars. The film also touches on wild moments in Williams’ career, promising scenes that include a chimpanzee with Oasis and other outrageous scenarios.
