Fans of Robbie Williams have been treated to a first look at a unique biopic titled “Better Man,” which tells the singer’s story through an unconventional lens, featuring a CGI monkey in the role of Williams. Scheduled for release in the UK on Boxing Day, the film is directed by Michael Gracey, known for his work on “The Greatest Showman,” which was a major box office success.
“Better Man” chronicles Williams’ journey from a challenging childhood to his time with the boy band Take That, leading to his solo career where he achieved massive success. Williams boasts an impressive track record, with 11 of his 12 studio albums hitting the top of the UK charts, and he has won a record 13 Brit Awards. The film aims to depict the highs and lows of his life, including his struggles with substance abuse and occasionally controversial behavior.
The film has already been showcased at the Telluride and Toronto film festivals, receiving positive feedback. The Guardian’s Benjamin Lee praised it for its unexpected appeal, highlighting that while the concept sounded gimmicky, the film delivers a compelling narrative with Williams’ honest portrayal at its core.
Featuring Williams’ voiceover, the trailer highlights Gracey’s flair for musical sequences, including a vibrant scene beneath the Christmas lights on Regent Street in London, complete with a playful attitude toward profanity. Other reviews have echoed this sentiment, with Variety noting that despite the unconventional approach, the film stands out in the biopic genre, promising memorable moments such as a chimp interacting with Oasis and other outrageous scenes.
