Fans of Robbie Williams are getting their first look at an unusual biopic titled Better Man, which recounts the singer’s rise to fame, featuring a CGI monkey portraying him. The film is set to premiere in the UK on Boxing Day and is directed by Michael Gracey, known for his work on The Greatest Showman, which was a major box office success.
Better Man chronicles Williams’ journey from a tumultuous childhood to his success with the boy band Take That and later as a solo artist. With 11 out of 12 studio albums reaching the top of the UK charts and three greatest hits compilations also achieving the same feat, Williams holds the record for the most Brit awards, totaling 13. The film reportedly candidly addresses Williams’ struggles, including substance abuse and challenging behavior associated with fame.
The film has already been showcased at the Telluride and Toronto film festivals, receiving positive feedback. The Guardian’s Benjamin Lee praised the film, claiming it transformed what could have been an irritating gimmick into a compelling narrative, highlighting the genuine portrayal of Williams. “It’s not only Gracey’s electric style that makes Better Man appealing, but also the candid honesty in Williams’ depiction,” Lee stated.
The trailer features Williams’ voiceover and showcases Gracey’s talent for integrating musical elements, including a vibrant sequence set beneath Christmas lights on London’s Regent Street, embellished with Williams’ characteristic humor and irreverence.
Other reviewers have echoed positive sentiments, with Variety noting the uniqueness of the film’s approach, stating, “Against all odds, that gimmick works, distinguishing the project from so many other cookie-cutter pop-star hagiographies.” The film promises to deliver unconventional moments, including a chimpanzee in humorous situations, making it stand out in the biopic genre.
