Fans of Robbie Williams are getting a first look at one of the most unusual biopics in history, which recounts his journey to fame with the pop singer from Stoke being represented by a CGI monkey.
Titled Better Man, the film is set to be released on Boxing Day in the UK and is directed by Michael Gracey, who previously directed The Greatest Showman, a film that grossed $435 million and topped music charts.
The storyline follows Williams, portrayed by actor Jonno Davies through motion capture technology, chronicling his tumultuous childhood, his success with the boy band Take That, and ultimately his rise as a solo superstar. With 11 out of 12 studio albums reaching the top of the UK charts, along with three greatest hits compilations, Williams also holds the record for the most Brit Awards, totaling 13. The film is expected to candidly portray his darker side, including struggles with substance abuse and difficult behavior.
Better Man has already been showcased at the Telluride and Toronto film festivals, with positive feedback noted from the Guardian’s Benjamin Lee, who called it “a surprising winner.” He remarked that, while the concept might initially seem gimmicky, the film delivers with Gracey’s vibrant direction and Williams’ honest portrayal.
The trailer features Williams’ voiceover and showcases Gracey’s talent for musical numbers, including a vibrant sequence under Christmas lights in London’s Regent Street, infused with Williams’ characteristic humor and candid language.
Overall, reviews have leaned favorably, with Variety stating, “Against all odds, that gimmick works, distinguishing the project from so many other cookie-cutter pop-star hagiographies.” The film promises provocative scenes, including a chimpanzee interacting with the band Oasis, hinting at a wild narrative ahead.
