Fans of Robbie Williams are in for a treat with the newly released trailer for the musical biopic “Better Man.” Directed by Michael Gracey, known for “The Greatest Showman,” the film features a unique twist: a CGI monkey is used to portray the British pop star.
In the trailer, Williams himself provides narration, addressing the unusual choice by saying, “I know what you’re thinking. What’s with the monkey? I’m Robbie Williams. I’m one of the biggest pop stars in the world. But I’ve always seen myself a little less evolved.” The initial glimpse of the film resembles other musical biopics focused on iconic artists, but every scene depicting Williams is replaced by an ape double reminiscent of “Planet of the Apes.”
The trailer showcases Williams’ childhood, highlighting his early passion for soccer, where he is seen dressed as a monkey. It also features a montage of Williams performing to enthusiastic crowds, yet his character is depicted as a screeching ape with an exaggerated tongue and oversized teeth.
The official synopsis describes “Better Man” as a tale rooted in the true story of Robbie Williams’ rise, fall, and remarkable comeback as a preeminent British pop icon. The film captures his life journey—from his upbringing, through his time as the youngest member of the hit boy band Take That, to his record-breaking success as a solo artist—all while dealing with the challenges that come with immense fame.
The cast includes Steve Pemberton, Damon Herriman, Raechelle Banno, Alison Steadman, Kate Mulvaney, Frazer Hadfield, Tom Budge, and Anthony Hayes, with Jonno Davies playing the monkey version of Williams.
The screenplay for “Better Man” was crafted by Gracey alongside Simon Gleeson and Oliver Cole. Executive producers include Williams and several others in the industry.
