Robbie Brenner has made significant strides in Hollywood, carving a niche for herself by championing independent projects and leading innovative ventures as president of Mattel Films. Her remarkable journey includes producing the Oscar-winning film “Dallas Buyers Club” and spearheading the cultural phenomenon “Barbie,” which grossed over a billion dollars. Brenner’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of storytelling has earned her a place on Forbes and Know Your Value’s 2024 “50 Over 50” lifestyle list.

In a recent conversation with Mika Brzezinski, Brenner reflected on her early inspirations and the resolve it took to bring “Dallas Buyers Club” to fruition. Growing up in New York City with a mother in medical school—a pioneering feat for women at that time—inspired Brenner to break barriers and aspire for greatness. She learned from her mother that there is always a glass ceiling to shatter and that one can achieve their dreams with passion and persistence.

While discussing her entry into the film industry, Brenner revealed that her love for storytelling began early, sparked by her father’s passion for photography. After initially pursuing acting at NYU Film School, she recognized her desire for creative control and shifted her focus to filmmaking. This determination led her to Los Angeles, where she began to carve out her career.

Brenner also shared insights into the long journey of bringing “Dallas Buyers Club” to the big screen. Initially encountering numerous rejections and setbacks, including seeking financing through credit cards, Brenner’s tenacity ultimately paid off. She found support from a Texas investor who appreciated the film’s unique narrative—a story focused on the unlikely bond formed between two characters amid adversity. The film, released in 2013, garnered critical acclaim, receiving seven Academy Award nominations and winning three.

Transitioning to her work on “Barbie,” Brenner discussed the challenges of creating a film based on a character that had become polarizing over the years. However, under the direction of Greta Gerwig, the film transformed into a fresh interpretation celebrating empowerment and creativity. Brenner highlighted the importance of bringing unexpected elements to storytelling, which she believes is essential in a saturated market.

Throughout her career, Brenner has learned valuable lessons about leadership, particularly the importance of using one’s voice to set boundaries and advocate for oneself. She strives to instill this confidence in her daughters, encouraging them to embrace authenticity and self-expression.

Looking towards the future, Brenner expressed excitement about upcoming projects at Mattel, including a reimagining of “Barney” in collaboration with A24 and Daniel Kaluuya. She hopes to surprise audiences again by delivering fresh perspectives on familiar brands, emphasizing the importance of crafting unique and compelling narratives.

Brenner’s commitment to breaking barriers and her passion for storytelling serve as an inspiration to many, demonstrating that with determination and creativity, exceptional stories can emerge from even the most challenging circumstances.
