Savenaca Qabale, a bright talent in Fijian rugby, is moving closer to fulfilling his lifelong dream of donning the Flying Fijians jersey. As a member of the Fiji Schoolboys under-18 rugby team, the young athlete from Macuata has been nurturing his aspirations since he played kaji rugby. Selected for the Fiji Schoolboys squad for the second time, Qabale acknowledges the challenges ahead but remains resolute in his commitment to achieving his goals.
Reflecting on his early beginnings in competitive rugby, Qabale expressed his gratitude, saying, “Ever since I started playing competitive rugby when I was under-nine, I always wanted to play for Fiji. I just thank God for giving me the talent to be able to pursue rugby.” His journey includes being part of Queen Victoria School’s under-18 team during the Vodafone Deans Trophy competition, a tournament he has participated in since Year 9.
Despite obstacles along the way, including moments of doubt, Qabale credits his family for their unwavering support, helping him persevere. The Fiji Schoolboys are scheduled to tour Australia next month, providing Qabale and his teammates with further opportunities to showcase their talent on a larger stage.
Qabale’s journey mirrors that of other young Fijian athletes, like Rafaele Tuikitai Waqalala, who was recently selected for the Fijian Drua Academy. The narratives of these aspiring players underline a shared dream among Fijian youth: to represent their country at the highest levels of the sport. Their stories emphasize the importance of hard work, dedication, and strong community and family support in the pursuit of their ambitions.
Both Qabale and his peers exemplify the potential of Fiji’s young athletes, whose determination and passion for rugby serve as an inspiration for future generations. As they continue to reach for their dreams, their journeys reveal the vibrant spirit and promising future of rugby in Fiji.
