Riyadh’s driverless taxi pilot set for expansion under Vision 2030

The Transport General Authority (TGA) of Saudi Arabia has announced the continuation of its autonomous vehicle service in the capital city of Riyadh, in collaboration with technology partners Uber and WeRide. Since its initial launch, the service has generated substantial public interest, with over 950 passengers benefiting from the innovative transportation option.

Currently, the autonomous vehicles operate along two designated routes within the Roshn Front and the Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University. Each location is equipped with multiple dedicated stations to streamline passenger pick-up and drop-off processes. The TGA oversees the service with regulatory and technical supervision, ensuring the highest safety standards are maintained through the presence of safety officers in each vehicle, who monitor the smart systems in real-world conditions.

This initiative is a crucial part of the TGA’s commitment to enhancing smart and sustainable mobility solutions while integrating cutting-edge technologies within the transport sector. It aligns with the broader objectives of Saudi Arabia’s National Transport and Logistics Strategy and Vision 2030, aimed at promoting innovation and improving public transportation.

Looking ahead, the TGA plans to gradually expand the service, adding more routes and key destinations throughout Riyadh. By the end of the year, the fleet is expected to grow to over 20 autonomous vehicles, with support from various governmental entities, including the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, and the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), among others.

The public is encouraged to book an autonomous vehicle through the Uber app, offering a glimpse into the future of transportation in the Kingdom, emphasizing safety and intelligent travel solutions. This advancement not only enhances mobility but also represents a significant step towards a more efficient and technologically driven transport system in Saudi Arabia.
