Rivian has unveiled its upgraded second-generation quad-motor configuration for its R1 line, which aims to enhance both performance and user experience. Originally introduced during a press drive in May 2024, the revamped lineup features significant overhauls in various components, including the battery pack, suspension system, electrical architecture, and software interface.
One of the standout features is the new “kick turn,” which allows vehicles to rotate around their center while in motion, enhancing maneuverability on off-road trails. The feature, tested during a June press drive, enables the vehicle to spin while traveling under 20 mph on dirt, facilitating sharp turns without the traditional three-point maneuver. This innovation is a more controlled version of the previously teased “tank turn” feature, which Rivian decided against implementing due to concerns about its impact on trails—reflecting the company’s commitment to outdoor activities and environmental preservation.
The quad-motor configuration is designed to deliver an impressive 1,025 horsepower and 1,198 pound-feet of torque, allowing for acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in under 2.5 seconds. Rivian has begun accepting orders for these models, with deliveries expected to start soon. Wassym Bensaid, Rivian’s head of software, emphasized that the quad-motor represents the culmination of the company’s engineering efforts, highlighting features such as advanced torque vectoring and balance algorithms. Customers will also benefit from the inclusion of the North American Charging Standard (NACS), granting access to Tesla’s extensive fast-charging network. Rivian is providing complimentary adapters for its quad-motor customers to ensure versatility and ease of access to charging infrastructure.
