Rivalry Reversal: Washington State Edges Out Washington in Dramatic Apple Cup Showdown

The 2024 Boeing Apple Cup was a nail-biter, with Washington narrowly losing to Washington State 24-19 at Lumen Field on Saturday. This defeat marks just the third victory for Washington State in the annual rivalry since 2008.

The game was played at Lumen Field as part of a five-year agreement to keep the rivalry alive despite the schools being in different conferences. Fans in purple outnumbered those in crimson in the stands.

Washington’s Will Rogers had a strong performance, passing for 314 yards and throwing a touchdown, while Giles Jackson recorded eight receptions for 162 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown in the first quarter. However, Washington struggled to convert drives into touchdowns, settling for field goals on three occasions while in the red zone, a key factor in their loss.

In the final moments of the game, Washington had a chance to tie after taking possession at their own 31-yard line with 3:40 remaining. Rogers connected with Jackson for a 45-yard gain, bringing them to the Washington State 10-yard line. On a crucial third-and-goal, Denzel Boston was stopped just shy of scoring, leading to a fourth-and-goal situation.

The Huskies opted for an option play to the short side, but Jonah Coleman was tackled for a 2-yard loss, sealing the victory for Washington State. Coleman finished the game with 75 yards on 14 carries.

Grady Gross had a standout performance, successfully converting all four of his field goal attempts, establishing new career highs. He made kicks from distances of 44, 42, 24, and 43 yards.

Jackson’s 101 receiving yards in the first half marked his second career game with over 100 yards. Washington will now turn its focus to Big Ten play, facing Northwestern next Saturday at 4 p.m., with tickets available for fans.
