Rivalry Ignited: OpenAI CEO Surprises with Rare Sports Car Drive

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was recently seen driving a rare Swedish sports car, sparking envy among social media users and irritation from his former friend Elon Musk.

Altman, 39, is an avid car enthusiast with a collection including a McLaren and a Koenigsegg Regera. During a business trip to Dubai in April, he and his husband, engineer Oliver Mulherin, drove sports cars around a race track, as per a Wall Street Journal profile.

The Koenigsegg Regera caught the most attention over the weekend after TikTok user and car enthusiast Joseph Velyan posted a video of the luxury vehicle. Velyan first saw the car in April on the streets of Napa.

“I’ve been into cars almost my whole life, and seeing a Koenigsegg was definitely a dream of mine — especially in public,” Velyan told Business Insider. “I go to car events and see some pretty rare cars often, but this is for sure the rarest one I’ve seen, and it caught my eye right away.”

Velyan originally posted footage of the Koenigsegg to his Instagram and TikTok accounts in April but recently shared the videos again after recognizing Altman in the driver’s seat.

The video was also posted on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter.

“CEO @OpenAI driving one of the most expensive cars,” the account Tesla Owners of Silicon Valley posted. “How did OpenAI become a for-profit business when it was initially a nonprofit?”

Shortly after, Musk responded, “Great question.” Earlier this year, Musk sued OpenAI, accusing Altman of deviating from the company’s original mission of advancing human life through a nonprofit model in favor of profit. OpenAI dismissed Musk’s complaints as “frivolous.”
