Rising Violence Against Teachers in Fiji Spurs Call for Safer Schools

A troubling surge in violence and misconduct against teachers in Fijian schools has come to light during a recent address to Parliament by Aseri Radrodro, the Minister for Education. He highlighted a series of alarming incidents, indicating that this is an ongoing and pressing issue within the educational system. Among the cases reported, one occurred in northern Tailevu, where a student exposed himself inappropriately to a teacher. In a stark reminder of the risks teachers face, the Minister noted three documented assaults on teachers as of 2025.

One particularly severe incident involved a teacher being assaulted by a parent in Lautoka on July 23, 2025. Additionally, a physical altercation took place when a student attacked a teacher in a former technical college’s car park in Nausori. Another case in Navua saw a student punch a teacher inside a classroom, highlighting the need for improved safety measures within educational environments.

Radrodro also reviewed previous reports, indicating that in 2024 there were three cases of teacher assaults, one of which included the disturbing sexual exposure incident. Other instances of verbal and physical abuse arose when teachers confronted students about inappropriate behavior, illustrating that these troubling encounters are not limited to one-off events.

These statistics paint a concerning picture of a violent culture in schools that affects both teachers and students. Similar trends have been identified elsewhere, with reports of aggressive encounters becoming alarmingly frequent. An ongoing investigation into a student assaulting a classmate mirrors these troubling patterns, further emphasizing the urgent need for effective intervention strategies.
