A disturbing trend of violence and misconduct against teachers in Fijian schools has been revealed during a recent presentation to Parliament by the Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro. The most serious incident raised by Minister Radrodro occurred on July 23, 2025, when a parent allegedly assaulted a teacher in Lautoka. In another troubling case, a student attacked a teacher in the car park of a former technical college in Nausori, highlighting the urgent issue of safety in educational environments. Additionally, in February of the same year, a student punched a teacher inside a classroom in Navua, showcasing the increasing frequency of violence in schools.
Minister Radrodro also provided insights into incidents from previous years, stating that three teacher assault cases were reported in 2024 and one in 2023. The 2024 cases included the aforementioned sexual exposure incident, as well as instances of verbal abuse and physical assault stemming from a teacher confronting a student about a solvent smell.
