Sergio Berrueta has emerged as a rising star in the news industry, transitioning from a background in print media to making his mark in broadcast journalism. Hailing from Bell Gardens, California, a vibrant area of Southeast Los Angeles, Berrueta began his professional career as a newscast producer for North Coast News (now The Northstate’s News) at KAEF ABC 23 in Eureka in 2022.
Following his initial role behind the scenes, Berrueta made a bold move to become a multimedia journalist for Redwood News Channel 3 (KIEM/KVIQ) in Eureka within the same year. This shift signifies his commitment to engaging directly with audiences and telling impactful stories.
A graduate of Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt), Berrueta earned his Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, where he held several positions within the university’s El Lenador, the only bilingual publication in Humboldt County. His extensive experience in journalism began earlier when he attained his Associate’s Degree at East Los Angeles College in 2019, contributing to the ELAC Campus News as a staff writer and editor.
Not only has Berrueta dedicated himself to journalism, but he has also contributed to education as an AmeriCorps tutor in East Hollywood from 2017 to 2019. Furthermore, in 2021, he served as a National Hometown Fellow for Lead for America with the City of Arcata, showcasing his commitment to community engagement and civic service.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Berrueta nurtures his passion for cinema, often writing about films in his spare time. His creative outlets include poetry, video gaming, and exploring the stunning landscapes of the California Coast while keeping up with contemporary music and podcasts.
