At the age of 19, Naomi Tegu has quickly risen through the ranks in rugby league, recently earning her place on the Fiji Bulikula squad. This selection is a significant milestone for Tegu, who only began her rugby career in 2023. Grateful for the opportunity, she credits national coach Wise Kativerata for recognizing her potential.
“I started playing rugby league in 2023, and I’m very happy to have been noticed by coach Wise,” Tegu expressed. Despite encountering challenges along her journey, her determination remained steadfast as she focused on her ambition to debut for the Bulikula. “There were some obstacles, but they did not deter me,” she reflected, highlighting her resilient spirit.
Tegu’s rapid progression from a newcomer to a national team member showcases the increasing prominence of women’s rugby league in Fiji. Her inclusion in the squad not only marks a personal accomplishment but also underscores the broader advancements in female sports throughout the country.
Before her selection to the national team, Tegu captained the Lami Steelers, leading them to the semi-finals of the Fiji National Rugby League Women’s premiership tournament. Her unexpected journey—from having minimal knowledge of rugby to competing at a national level—demonstrates not only her dedication but also the important role of supportive structures like Kativerata’s rugby academy in fostering emerging talent.
As she gears up for the forthcoming match against the Cook Islands, Tegu stresses the importance of teamwork and solid defensive strategies. “All players must fulfill their individual roles, maintain their running lines, and ensure that our defensive line remains intact without any gaps,” she emphasized.
Tegu’s inspiring story serves as a beacon of hope for young athletes in Fiji, illustrating that with hard work and support, reaching the highest levels of sports is achievable. The increasing attention towards women’s rugby league in Fiji reflects a positive trajectory for female athletes in the region, heralding a bright future for the sport.
