The transition into college life is an exhilarating yet challenging experience, especially for first-year students who step onto campus with dreams and ambitions. This rings true for Wake Forest volleyball’s first-year player Cy Rae Campbell, who is currently journeying through her freshman year in Winston-Salem during the 2024-25 school year. As she approaches the midpoint of her season, Cy is balancing academic responsibilities with the demands of volleyball, all while reflecting on the significance of National Native American Heritage Month.
Originally from Olathe, Kansas, Cy has always been active, engaging in various sports and proudly representing the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska. The month of November carries a personal resonance for her, as she emphasizes the importance of community and advocacy among Native Americans. “This month means a lot to me… it highlights, as a community, what we can stand for,” she expressed.
Cy’s upbringing in a close-knit community played a crucial role in shaping her identity and athletic prowess. She found fulfillment in playing sports and spending time with friends, cherishing the supportive environment in Olathe where she developed her love for volleyball. Her dedication saw her shine at Heritage Christian Academy, where she consistently ranked among the top prospects in the nation, contributing to her team’s impressive four consecutive state championships.
Her talent and teammate relationships became the center of her high school experience, making the journey worthwhile. “The most fun part about that experience was doing it with my friends,” she recalled, noting the challenges they overcame together.
By July 2022, Cy made the decision to join the Wake Forest team, drawn by its distinguished reputation and warm community. Arriving on the East Coast has introduced her to new experiences, including a climate that differs significantly from her home state. Appreciating the inclusive spirit of Wake Forest, illustrated by its Pro Humanitate motto, Cy feels that her collegiate experiences are invaluable.
As part of a recruiting class that includes several freshmen, Cy is gearing up for a challenging final stretch of the season in the ACC. She has quickly learned that collegiate volleyball is a faster and more intense game than what she experienced in high school. The emphasis on detailed analysis and strategy is a notable shift that she has eagerly embraced.
The foundation of her journey in college is still being built, with Cy setting personal goals, including maintaining her academic performance while forging new friendships. “In the offseason, I want to really work on my training because that’s when you become faster and stronger,” she remarked, showing her commitment to personal and athletic growth.
As Cy Rae Campbell navigates her first year as a college athlete, she embodies the spirit of resilience and determination. Her journey reflects not only the excitement of fresh starts but also the importance of community, teamwork, and continuous self-improvement. With her goals set and a spirit of perseverance, Cy looks toward a promising future both in her studies and on the volleyball court, making the most out of this pivotal chapter in her life.
This inspiring journey serves as a reminder that the college experience is about more than just academics or athletics; it’s about growth, connection, and establishing a foundation for the future.
