The experience of a first year in college is often filled with excitement and ambition, as newcomers embark on a journey that sets the stage for their future. Cy Rae Campbell, a freshman middle hitter for the Wake Forest volleyball team, is no exception. As she adapts to life in Winston-Salem during the 2024-25 academic year, Cy embraces both the challenges and opportunities that come with this new chapter.
Currently reaching the midpoint of her first collegiate season, Cy is focused on balancing her athletic commitments with academic responsibilities. As November marks National Native American Heritage Month, she acknowledges the significance of this time for her and her community. Cy stated, “This month means a lot to me. It’s about celebrating our past, present, and future—highlighting what we can stand for and things we might want to advocate for.”
Hailing from Olathe, Kansas, Cy grew up as an active member of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska, participating in various sports throughout her youth. Reflecting on her community, she conveyed a strong sense of pride in her Native American heritage and the importance of family bonds.
In Olathe, Cy enjoyed a balanced lifestyle where activities were accessible, although after-school options were limited. She found joy in playing volleyball and basketball, as well as spending time with friends.
Cy’s volleyball journey flourished at Heritage Christian Academy, where she became one of the nation’s top prospects, earning multiple state championships and numerous accolades throughout her high school career. However, she emphasizes that her favorite memories stem from the camaraderie shared with her teammates rather than just the titles won.
Her commitment to Wake Forest came early in her recruitment process, and the transition from Kansas to the East Coast has brought its own adjustments. “It’s definitely warmer here!” she noted while also appreciating Wake Forest’s inclusive campus culture and its Pro Humanitate motto.
As she navigates her collegiate volleyball career, Cy acknowledged the increased intensity of the game at this level. The fast-paced nature of collegiate play, combined with the physicality of older opponents, has challenged her to elevate her skills both physically and strategically.
Looking ahead, Cy has set personal goals for herself, focusing on maintaining her academic performance and working on her training during the offseason. She recognizes that building friendships may take time due to her busy schedule but hopes to connect more with classmates in the spring.
Cy Rae Campbell’s journey as a first-year student-athlete embodies the essence of growth and adaptability. As she continues to navigate the thrilling world of college life, her story serves as a reminder that every beginning holds the potential for great accomplishments, both in sports and in life.
This positive outlook emphasizes the potential for personal and athletic growth as Cy makes the most of her inaugural year, facing challenges head-on while embracing new experiences that await in the coming months.
