Joel Israel, the Acting Chief Executive, stressed the necessity of mandating smoke alarms and early fire detection systems for all residential types as part of the National Building Code. He pointed out that smoke alarms serve as a crucial life-saving measure, delivering early alerts that enable occupants to evacuate safely before fires can spread.
Israel also raised awareness about the perils of using homes as storage zones for flammable materials, such as outdated furniture and excessive clutter, which can worsen fire conditions and obstruct escape routes. He emphasized that fire prevention is not just the responsibility of the Authority but requires a united effort from policymakers, homeowners, landlords, and tenants alike.
To reduce fire risks, Israel proposed practical strategies such as installing smoke alarms, ensuring exits are unobstructed, and adhering to safe practices in cooking and electrical usage.
