Eighteen-year-old Suliano Savenaca from Cakaudrove, with familial roots in Yaqeta, Yasawa, is filled with enthusiasm as he trains alongside some of Fiji’s top rugby sevens players. He has been selected as one of two representatives from the Ratu Kadavulevu School’s under-18 squad for the Fiji 7s development team, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning rugby career.
Savenaca expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, sharing his excitement about being able to train with players he has long admired. “I’m thankful for this opportunity. Most of these players I only see on TV, but to be training with them is like a dream come true,” he said. He recognizes the crucial support of his coaches and has aspirations of one day donning the Fiji jersey on the international stage.
Though the training sessions have proven rigorous, Savenaca values the bonds and guidance from his teammates. “The training has been really tough, but I want to thank the team for keeping us motivated and helping us learn new things,” he commented.
He is particularly eager about the prospect of traveling to Korea for an upcoming sevens tournament, viewing it as a pivotal step forward in his career. Savenaca attributes his achievements to divine guidance and encourages young people to heed their parents’ advice, emphasizing the importance of discipline in chasing dreams. “My message to the youths like me is to listen to your parents, and you will come a long way,” he advised.
As anticipation builds in the Fijian rugby community for the announcement of the final squad for the Dubai 7s, the spotlight shines on rising talents like Savenaca and his teammate Lemeki Ravukivuki, who is also part of the extended Fiji 7s squad. Their selection signifies the school’s dedication to developing young athletes and underscores the ongoing growth of rugby in Fiji.
With a blend of determination and ambition, these young athletes are not only preparing for immediate challenges but also aim to inspire the next generation of rugby players, paving the way for a promising future for Fijian rugby on the international front. The excitement surrounding their journeys bodes well for the sport’s growth, showcasing the potential of emerging talents in Fiji’s vibrant rugby scene.
