The East Side Union High School District in San Jose has reported a significant rise in its unhoused student population, now nearing 1,000 children. At Independence High School, approximately 100 students have declared themselves as unhoused, frequently reaching out to community specialist Maggie Rodriguez for support. Rodriguez empathizes deeply with their struggles, noting the stark contrast between her own situation and that of her students.
The challenges these students face extend well beyond the classroom, severely impacting their ability to learn. Blasa Ozuna from the district emphasized the extraordinary obstacles these children encounter, describing their situation as a “nightmare.” The current count of 950 unhoused students is rising by around 50 each month and does not account for those who may feel too embarrassed to reveal their living situation.
Despite these difficulties, students continue to attend school, seeking education, meals, and a supportive ear from Rodriguez. She passionately counters common stereotypes, asserting that unhoused individuals often demonstrate incredible resilience and drive.
In response to this growing concern, the school district is organizing a fundraiser aimed at providing holiday gift baskets, which will include a $75 gift card for each student. Ozuna explained that this gift is more than a financial contribution; it represents recognition and compassion, reassuring the students that they are seen and cared for.
This initiative not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters a sense of community support, reminding unhoused students that they are not alone in their struggle. As the district works to raise funds and awareness, it hopes to provide these resilient students with the recognition and resources they deserve during the holiday season.
Overall, such efforts highlight the importance of community involvement in supporting vulnerable populations, showcasing a hopeful approach to addressing the challenges faced by unhoused students.
