LAS VEGAS – While Demetrious Johnson is often hailed as the greatest flyweight fighter of all time, Joshua Van offers a fresh perspective, believing that the current champion, Alexandre Pantoja, deserves that title. Van is set to challenge UFC flyweight champion Pantoja at UFC 323, which will be held at T-Mobile Arena this Saturday.
Sporting a record of 15-2 in MMA and 8-1 in the UFC, Van holds Pantoja in high regard. “We have to give credit to Pantoja – he’s the greatest of all time in my eyes,” he remarked during the UFC 323 media day. He emphasized the significance of his matchup against Pantoja, calling it a classic battle between the up-and-coming fighter and an established champion.
Pantoja, with a record of 30-5 and 14-3 in the UFC, has impressively defended his title four times – a noteworthy achievement in the flyweight division, one that echoes the legendary run of Johnson, who had 11 consecutive title defenses.
Van’s perception of Pantoja as the flyweight GOAT reflects a generational shift; he started watching UFC after 2017, which means he missed Johnson’s prime years. “When he got the belt, that’s when I made my debut, so I’m used to seeing him at the top,” Van explained, reinforcing his view on Pantoja’s legacy.
At just 24 years old, Van is poised to make history not only by competing for a title but also by being the first fighter born in the 2000s to challenge for a UFC championship. “It feels great to represent the younger generation,” he expressed, highlighting his excitement about this historic moment. “Every time I fight, I make history.”
The upcoming bout presents an exciting scenario in the flyweight division, showcasing the blend of established greatness with the thrill of rising talent, ready to make his mark in the sport.
