The inaugural Rise Taveuni Campaign successfully motivated over 400 students on Taveuni to prioritize their education and aspirations. Organized by the Taveuni Empowerment of Women Support Group (TEWSG), the event was designed to inspire the youth by showcasing achievements of successful Taveuni professionals and advocates for education and personal growth.
Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua delivered a compelling keynote speech, encouraging students to seize every opportunity and make wise choices that do not limit their future potential. Sharing his own journey, he emphasized the pride and achievements of Taveuni natives who have represented Fiji internationally.
The event highlighted the success stories of individuals like Ms. Alfreda Fisher, a Republic of Fiji Naval officer and Fijiana rugby team captain; Mr. Antonio Raivalita Yavalanavanua, a legal practitioner with Australian Aid; and Mr. Joji Masivesi, a young entrepreneur. These figures serve as inspirations for Taveuni’s youth, reflecting the diverse paths to success available to them.
Since 2014, the Taveuni Empowerment of Women Support Group—a coalition of mothers and grandmothers—has addressed socio-economic challenges impacting women, youth, and children in the region. With backing from Women’s Fund Fiji, the Rise Taveuni Campaign is a further step in fostering positive change and empowerment, particularly for the island’s younger population.
This initiative aligns with broader movements in Fiji that emphasize women’s empowerment and gender equity. Similar initiatives, such as the Women Invigorating the Nation (WIN) Convention, underscore the commitment to transformative dialogue, cooperation, and societal norm shifts that uplift marginalized groups.
The Rise Taveuni Campaign stands as a hopeful testament to the power of community-driven efforts in nurturing and inspiring the next generation. By celebrating local achievements and promoting educational advancement, the campaign reinforces the collective mission to empower youth and women, aiming for a more equitable and brighter future for Taveuni and beyond.
