Over 400 students on Taveuni were motivated to prioritize their education and future aspirations at the inaugural Rise Taveuni Campaign. This event was organized by the Taveuni Empowerment of Women Support Group (TEWSG) and aimed to inspire the youth by featuring successful Taveuni professionals and significant figures advocating for education and personal growth.
Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua delivered a stirring keynote speech, urging young minds to “rise with the first light,” seizing every opportunity to grow and succeed. Sharing his journey from a farmer’s son to a government leader, Naivalurua emphasized the importance of making wise choices that do not hinder one’s future potential. He commended the achievements of many Taveuni natives who have represented Fiji internationally, fostering pride in their heritage and accomplishments.
The event also highlighted Taveuni success stories, such as Ms. Alfreda Fisher, a Republic of Fiji Naval officer and Fijiana rugby team captain; Mr. Antonio Raivalita Yavalanavanua, a legal practitioner working with Australian Aid; and Mr. Joji Masivesi, a young entrepreneur. These individuals serve as inspirations, showcasing the diverse paths to success available to Taveuni’s youth.
Since its inception in 2014, TEWSG, a collective of mothers and grandmothers, has made significant strides in tackling socio-economic issues affecting women, youth, and children in the region. With financial support from Women’s Fund Fiji, the Rise Taveuni Campaign is yet another step towards creating avenues for positive change and empowerment, especially among the island’s younger population.
This initiative dovetails with broader movements across Fiji that emphasize women’s empowerment and gender equity. Similar platforms, such as the Women Invigorating the Nation (WIN) Convention, showcase the ongoing commitment to fostering dialogue, cooperation, and transformation in societal norms that uplift marginalized groups.
The Rise Taveuni Campaign is a hopeful reminder of the potential for community-driven initiatives to nurture and inspire the next generation. By honoring local high achievers and promoting educational advancement, the campaign illustrates the collective mission to empower youth and women, ensuring a brighter, more equitable future for all in Taveuni and beyond.
