Richardson’s Return: Triumphs and Trials on the Colts’ Comeback Trail

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson made his return in Week 7 against the Miami Dolphins after missing two weeks due to an oblique injury. The second-year player had previously faced significant challenges, having missed a substantial portion of last season.

In his comeback game, Richardson struggled with his passing, completing 10 of 24 attempts for 129 yards. However, he led the team in rushing, carrying the ball 14 times for 56 yards. The Colts encountered difficulties, with six drives resulting in three-and-outs during the third quarter, while their fourth-quarter drives culminated in field goals.

When it came to third downs, Richardson managed just one completion on seven attempts for 10 yards, alongside four carries for 33 yards that led to a first down. Notably, he did not throw any passes in the red zone but did have a mishap during a handoff that resulted in the Colts’ only turnover of the game.

Among the highlights, Richardson executed a creative double-reverse flea-flicker play that gained 13 yards. Despite the struggles, he showcased some positive moments, including a key run after a turnover that helped tie the game at 10-10 and a 33-yard completion to Michael Pittman Jr. that set up a field goal before halftime.

As of Week 7, Richardson’s overall statistics stood at 49 completions on 101 attempts for 783 yards, with three touchdowns and six interceptions, along with 35 rushing attempts for 197 yards and one touchdown.

Richardson is playing under a four-year rookie contract that carries a cap hit of $7.725 million this season, totaling nearly $34 million for the entire contract period. In contrast, veteran quarterback Joe Flacco has thrown for 716 yards and seven touchdowns with one interception in four appearances for the Colts, while also being under a one-year contract worth $5 million toward the salary cap.
