Richard Gere, now residing in Spain with his family, has expressed that while he appreciates his new lifestyle, he misses the vibrant “energy” of New York City. Speaking to PEOPLE during the DOC NYC Visionaries Tribute Luncheon, Gere shared his feelings about the contrast between life in Spain and the bustle of NYC. “Of course, it’s very addictive,” he noted, highlighting the city’s unique allure.
Gere, along with his wife Alejandra Silva and their two young boys, Alex and James, along with Silva’s 11-year-old son Albert from a previous relationship, relocated to Spain late last year. The actor emphasized that overall, the move has been a positive change for their family, largely due to Alejandra’s happiness in being closer to her family and roots. “My wife is so happy in Spain, so that’s the best part of that,” he remarked.
The actor further praised the warmth of Spanish culture, noting, “It’s a very happy place. Like the Italians. I mean, being in Italy, being in Spain, you’re dealing with Latin cultures that just understand life in a different way than we do here.” He expressed his fondness for the food and the overall lifestyle, stating that the Spanish people are “very warm and very open and a lot less stressed than what you find here in the U.S.”
Previously, in an interview with Vanity Fair Spain, Gere elaborated on his decision to move, emphasizing the importance of Alejandra reconnecting with her culture and loved ones. “For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends and her culture,” he said, recognizing her generosity during their years in the U.S.
Despite his enjoyment of Spain, Gere has indicated that the move won’t sever ties with New York. He considers it a “great adventure,” and confirmed that the family plans to travel back and forth, maintaining a home in New York.
At 76, Gere continues to embrace new experiences with a positive outlook, celebrating the joyful aspects of life in Spain while cherishing his New York background. The actor’s reflection on cultural differences underscores the beauty of finding balance between varied lifestyles.
