ATLANTA – Rich Homie Quan, the Atlanta rapper, has passed away at the age of 34.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed to Atlanta News First that they were informed of his death by Grady Memorial Hospital on Thursday. His former record label, Young Money Entertainment, also verified the news through a social media announcement.
The news of his death has sparked reactions from numerous rappers and fans on social media platforms.
Rich Homie Quan, whose real name is Dequantes Devontay Lamar, was born in Atlanta on October 4, 1989. He was set to perform at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena on September 19.
Lamar began his music career in 2011 and gained mainstream recognition with his 2013 hit “Type of Way,” which reached No. 50 on the Billboard Hot 100. His 2015 track “Flex” achieved further success, peaking at No. 26 on the chart.
In September 2014, Quan’s father, Corey Lamar, sustained injuries during a shooting at his barbershop. Fulton County prosecutors have been investigating connections between this incident and an alleged criminal gang led by Young Thug, who is currently facing multiple criminal and gang-related charges in Atlanta.
Recently, Kenneth Copeland, also known as Lil’ Woody, admitted to participating in the shooting alongside a friend, claiming their motive was to “send a message.”
Copeland’s testimony had been pivotal for prosecutors in their case against Jeffery Williams, better known as Young Thug. However, Copeland has admitted to previously lying to police in 2015 during the investigation into the alleged Young Slime Life or Young Stoner Life gang.
