Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan, who gained fame in 2013, has passed away in Georgia, as confirmed by law enforcement. According to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office, Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta reported the news of the rapper’s death on Thursday. He was 33 years old.
Details regarding the cause and manner of his death have not yet been released, but an autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
Rich Homie Quan, whose real name is Dequantes Devontay Lamar, made a major impact on the music scene with his hit song “Type of Way” over a decade ago, followed by “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” in 2015.
Rapper Boosie Badazz shared his condolences on social media, reminiscing about their time together and stating that they shared many good memories that would always bring a smile to his face. He also mentioned that he and Rich Homie Quan were working on music together before his passing.
Attempts to reach Rich Homie Quan’s family and management for comments were unsuccessful Thursday afternoon.
Former Michigan State University football coach Mark Dantonio also took to social media to mourn the loss, sharing a photo of himself with Rich Homie Quan celebrating after the team won the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2014. He noted that “Type of Way” had become the team’s anthem that season, with players and coaches dancing to the song after their victory over Stanford University.
In his post, Dantonio expressed his sorrow and recognized the special moments shared with Rich Homie Quan, ending his tribute with prayer hands emoji.
In 2014, Rich Homie Quan was honored in XXL magazine’s inaugural Freshman Class, joining other rising stars like Chance the Rapper, Ty Dolla $ign, and Kevin Gates. Throughout his career, he received multiple nominations for both BET and BET Hip Hop Awards, including accolades for best new artist and the people’s champ award. Additionally, he collaborated with prominent artists in the industry such as 2 Chainz, Young Thug, Gucci Mane, and Trinidad James.
