More than 4,000 individuals in Fiji are currently diagnosed with Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD), with a staggering 70% of those affected being under the age of 30. This troubling statistic underscores a significant public health crisis, as RHD ranks as the second leading cause of death among young people aged 5 to 29 in the nation.
During a World Heart Day event held at Hilton Special School in Suva, Health Ministry chief medical adviser Dr. Luisa Cikamatana addressed this urgent issue, calling for a concerted effort among governments, non-governmental organizations, schools, families, and communities to tackle the disease. She highlighted that the financial burden of hospitalizations and surgeries related to RHD on Fiji’s healthcare system exceeds $19 million annually.
Dr. Cikamatana urged for a united approach to protect every heartbeat and ensure a brighter future for children suffering from RHD, which emphasizes the community’s vital role in addressing health challenges. The event featured enthusiastic participation from Hilton Special School students, who showcased their commitment to awareness through placards and shared personal stories.
Among the speakers was Jonathan Lord, a rheumatic heart patient and vice-president of Heart Heroes Youth Fiji, who shared his personal journey and stressed the importance of raising awareness about RHD. This initiative complements ongoing efforts to focus on RHD education in schools and communities, as classroom statistics indicate that one child in each class is likely affected by this condition.
Erini Tokarua, manager of Heart Heroes Fiji, has also stressed the paramount importance of tackling RHD, noting that while the disease is preventable, it continues to tragically claim lives among the youth.
With initiatives like World Heart Day fostering increased awareness and community engagement, there is optimism for improved health outcomes for those affected by RHD in Fiji. The commitment to education and proactive healthcare measures lays a foundation for a healthier future, equipping younger generations to face and overcome their health challenges with resilience and determination.
