Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has recently shifted his focus from vaccines and family disputes to a new target: Dunkin’, the beloved Massachusetts-based coffee chain. With multiple Dunkin’ locations within five miles of his family compound in Hyannis Port, Kennedy is making a case against the sugar content in their beverages, particularly iced coffees that can contain as much as 115 grams of sugar. He challenged Dunkin’ and other major coffee chains, including Starbucks, to provide safety data justifying the health implications of such sugary drinks on consumers, especially teenage girls.

“Their ability to show us that it’s safe for a teenage girl to drink an iced coffee with 115 grams of sugar is going to be pretty tough,” Kennedy remarked at a rally in Austin, suggesting that the evidence may not exist. The coffee industry has yet to respond directly to Kennedy’s remarks, but public reaction has been swift and varied, with supporters expressing loyalty to the coffee chain through social media.

Kennedy’s inquiry into the food supply extends beyond just coffee beverages. A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services emphasized that Kennedy is committed to ensuring transparency in the American food supply through evidence-based science. This effort includes addressing longstanding loopholes that allow food additives to be present without notifying regulatory authorities, a practice known as “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS).

Kennedy is pushing for reforms to close these loopholes, which allow companies to self-certify the safety of food ingredients without FDA notification. Notably, a proposed rule has been under review since December that could further address these issues. Additionally, former FDA chief David Kessler has filed a citizen petition advocating for a reevaluation of the safety of processed refined carbohydrates, challenging the assumption that such ingredients are safe.

The coffee industry, particularly Dunkin’, enjoys a dedicated following, with its iced coffees being a staple beverage even in colder months. With various ways to customize drinks, Dunkin’ has captured the hearts of many, including even officials at the White House during previous administrations.

While Kennedy’s regulatory approach may lean towards voluntary cooperation with the food industry rather than strict enforcement, his initiatives signal a growing awareness and concern over ingredients in popular food and beverage products. This could potentially lead to significant changes in how food safety and ingredient transparency are handled in the future, aiming for a healthier food environment for all consumers.
