Sereima Matea, a determined 69-year-old, skillfully navigates the brisk waters of the Rewa River to collect kai, or freshwater mussels, which she sells for $90 a sack. This demanding task may leave her with numb hands and tired feet, yet it serves as a poignant reminder of her resilience and the remarkable journey she has undertaken.
Originally from Nanuku, Yakete in Ba, Sereima’s life changed significantly after marrying a man from Naganivatu, leading her to settle in Naitasiri. Embracing her new surroundings, she adapted to the unique responsibilities of her community, which included the arduous work of harvesting kai from the river.
Reflecting on the contrast between buying kai from the market and gathering it herself, Sereima notes, “Collecting kai is not for the faint-hearted.” She shares the difficulties of enduring cold water and harsh sunlight, all while engaging in labor-intensive work. Nevertheless, women from neighboring villages rise early each day to wade into the river, ensuring they provide for their families.
Sereima acquired her skills from her mother-in-law, who patiently instructed her on the best methods and locations for finding kai, as well as how to withstand long hours in the water. “I was not taught these things back home in Ba, but marriage taught me something equally important—the ability to learn, adapt, and persevere,” Sereima explains.
For years, she has been collecting kai, using the income to support her three children—two sons and a daughter—in their pursuit of education. Today, all of her children are married and have families of their own, a testament to the sacrifices she made.
As her day comes to a close, the joy brought by her grandchildren fills her heart with happiness, overshadowing the physical toll of her labor. “Each sack of kai I collected represented food on the table, school fees paid, and hope for a better future,” she reflects. Her hard work has not only provided a source of income but has also been a powerful avenue for empowerment and fulfillment.
Looking back on her life’s journey, Sereima takes pride in her accomplishments, the life she has built far from her birthplace, and the valuable lessons learned along the way. “Marriage life teaches us many lessons. One of the greatest is that we must be willing to listen and learn if we are to thrive in the homes we marry into,” she emphasizes. Her story showcases that true strength lies not only in acquired knowledge but also in the courage to embrace new challenges and opportunities. Through her perseverance and dedication, Sereima serves as an inspiring example of resilience and hope.
