The Rewa Football Legends Club recently organized a thrilling cup challenge match at the Fiji FA Academy in Vatuwaqa, which successfully brought together football enthusiasts to witness former stars from Rewa, Lautoka, and Suva battle it out for the prestigious Vilitati Lee, George Koi, Onnie Wong, Nicolas Rounds, and Kavaia Memorial Cup.
Significantly enhancing the Rewa Legends’ lineup were former national team stars John Andrews, back from the USA, and Ronald Chaudary, returning from Canada. Their presence, along with local stalwarts like Pita Rabo and Patrick Wise, contributed to a standout team performance throughout the day.
The Rewa Legends showcased impressive skill and teamwork as they clinched victory over the Suva Legends with a score of 1-0 and narrowly defeated the Lautoka Legends 3-2, ultimately claiming the championship of the event. Following the gripping matches, an emotional presentation night unfolded at the Fiji FA Hall, where accolades were presented. Eliki Lui, a remarkable 69-year-old former midfielder, received the Oldest Player Award, while Pita Rabo and Usaia Tadu were recognized as the Best Players.
Adding depth to the evening, the Rewa Legends paid tribute to the late George Lui, Onnie Wong, and Vilitati Lee by offering cheques to their families, honoring their vital contributions to Fijian football.
Abdul Mannan, the President of the Rewa Football Legends Club and Vice President of Fiji FA, expressed gratitude to all teams, officials, and fans for their unwavering support. He emphasized the importance of preserving the legacy of football legends and uniting former players to celebrate the essence of the game.
Looking ahead, Mannan also announced an exciting upcoming matchup where the Rewa Legends will face off against the Ba Legends in a much-anticipated curtain-raiser during the FMF IDC next week. The winner of this encounter will earn the right to compete against next year’s IDC host, further igniting the excitement surrounding local football.
