Revolutionary Roofing Granule Promises Smog Reduction and Sustainability

The Garland Company, Inc., a roofing and building envelope manufacturer based in Cleveland, has launched a new cool roofing granule aimed at reducing smog, called StressPly Legacy FR Mineral.

Matt McDermott, president of Garland’s U.S. roofing division, expressed excitement over the company’s continued commitment to innovation and sustainability. He emphasized that any updates to the StressPly product line must adhere to Garland’s high standards for durability, waterproofing, and performance.

In a news release dated September 24, Garland announced that StressPly Legacy FR Mineral features a unique cool gray granule designed to reduce smog. When activated by sunlight, these granules bond with smog particles, transforming them into water-soluble salts that are washed away by rain.

The granules can then be “rejuvenated” for reuse, while the released salts contribute to the natural nitrogen cycle, benefiting plant life.

According to Garland, a typical 20,000-square-foot commercial roof covered with StressPly Legacy FR Mineral offers smog-reduction benefits equivalent to that of 216 trees or the yearly emissions from 14,000 miles of driving, based on the average American’s annual travel.

Julie Geyer, the director of research and development, noted that Garland continually seeks to enhance its products for greater durability and sustainability. She highlighted that StressPly Legacy FR Mineral is made from six environmentally friendly raw materials, including a strong reinforcement that incorporates yarns from recycled plastic bottles.

The development of StressPly Legacy emphasizes sustainability. It utilizes repurposed polymers and diverts materials like Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene, plastics, and crumb rubber from tires away from landfills.

This innovative membrane boasts up to 27% pre-consumer recycled content, 12% post-consumer recycled content, and 1% bio-based content, with its packaging made from 100% recycled materials. Sustainability is a priority throughout the product’s design, including in the pallet bag, roll tape, and stretch film.

McDermott highlighted that the sustainable advantages of the StressPly Legacy line extend beyond roofing, noting its long-lasting watertight performance and contribution to improved outdoor air quality. He remarked, “This is why at Garland, we say, ‘There’s nothing greener than a roof that lasts.’”
