Reviving the Thrill: “Skate” Set to Transform the Skateboarding Game Landscape

The Skate video game series has remained integral to the skateboarding scene since its launch in 2007. After a lengthy 15-year hiatus from new releases, EA is gearing up to introduce “Skate,” the next major installment in this beloved franchise.

The long wait for a new Skate game primarily stems from the ambitious visions the developers at Full Circle had for the project. John Lawlor, head of technology, detailed that their goals included expanding the game across various platforms, accommodating up to 150 players in each server, and revitalizing the core gameplay that fans adore. However, development faced challenges, particularly when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted their workflow.

Despite the extended gap since its predecessor, the latest Skate iteration channels the essence of the original trilogy effectively. Returning players will feel at home with the familiar Flick-It system, as Lawlor mentioned that the original code for this feature was integrated into the game’s new framework. “That was the original toy, and we ported it forward and brought it to Frostbite,” he emphasized.

Players can expect a new sense of freedom in this installment, encouraging exploration and creativity in building skate parks. Set in San Vansterdam, players can either explore the city or construct their own parks. Innovations in gameplay allow players to set up rail bars or ramps to tackle challenges, and these additions remain for others to enjoy, fostering a collaborative experience.

The game also introduces parkour mechanics, allowing players to climb skyscrapers and reveal hidden skateparks, reminiscent of the fluidity seen in games like Assassin’s Creed. Creative director Deran Chung explained these features were intentionally designed to simplify access to otherwise difficult-to-reach locations.

The developers are aware of the resurgence of Tony Hawk games in the market but view this as a positive for the skate genre. Chung expressed confidence that the variety of skating games, each with its unique flavor, contributes to a rich gaming landscape.

For fans and newcomers alike, “Skate” is set to rekindle the passion for skating. The developers’ dedication to authenticity and innovation promises an engaging experience that could inspire players to take to their boards again.
