This ambitious project included the development of 226 apartment units, along with 150 townhouses and a shopping center comprising 30 stores, framed by Atcheson Street to the north, North 20th Street to the east, Mt. Vernon Avenue to the south, and Monroe Avenue to the west.
A significant highlight of the plaza was an amphitheater featuring benches and a sculpture, which became the site of a major event on September 23, 1978, when President Jimmy Carter attended to officially dedicate Mt. Vernon Plaza. The occasion drew thousands of attendees eager to hear President Carter speak and celebrate the long-awaited opening of the facility.
Planning efforts for Mt. Vernon Plaza commenced as early as 1970, initiated by the Columbus Department of Development, which sought a grant to explore the potential of extending the Bolivar Arms Urban Renewal Project. Engaging with local residents through surveys and other outreach efforts, the department identified key community needs, such as the demand for a shopping center and improved low-income housing options.
The Neighborhood Development Corporation was selected by the city to lead the development of Mt. Vernon Plaza, with funding secured from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. In order to facilitate this redevelopment, the city utilized eminent domain to acquire land, resulting in the relocation of approximately 200 residents and several local businesses along Mt. Vernon Avenue.
Despite the $13 million project’s multiple delays and the skepticism of many regarding its completion, the dedication ceremony unveiled the completed apartment building, adorned with a banner proclaiming, “Out of the Past a Brilliant New Future.” This message echoed the community’s aspirations for revitalization and progress.
