On Sunday, Marine veteran Patrick Dailey is set to break ground on an exciting project in Philadelphia—a replica of the historic Tun Tavern, recognized as the birthplace of the Marine Corps. This symbolic event marks the commencement of Dailey’s dream, with hopes of opening the establishment in time for the Marine Corps’ 250th Birthday celebration in 2025, provided his nonprofit, the Tun Tavern Legacy Foundation, can raise the necessary $8 million.
Tun Tavern holds profound historical significance; established by Capt. Samuel Nicholas on November 10, 1775, it served as the recruitment site for the first Marines, leading to a legacy that includes notable battles and heroic figures throughout history. It’s also believed to be where John Adams and the Naval Committee met to draft foundational documents for what would evolve into the U.S. Navy.
Once operational, the new Tun Tavern is designed not only to serve as a gathering place for Marines but also to contribute to charitable causes affiliated with Marine-related organizations. Dailey’s vision was inspired by his experiences attending street parties at Cookie’s Tavern, which drew thousands despite its small size, prompting him to think about the potential of a dedicated venue for Marines.
Located at 19 South 2nd Street in Philadelphia’s Old City, the new Tun Tavern will feature a tavern serving historical drinks and an adjoining restaurant called Peg Mulligan’s Red Hot Beefsteak Club, offering food reflective of the 1700s.
Dailey, who grew up near the original site, didn’t learn about its historical significance until he joined the Marine Corps. With a military background that includes service in the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing and the 3rd Marine Division, he has devoted much of his life to community and Marine-centered nonprofits. Now, alongside partners like Rob Brink, he has secured the necessary zoning and city permits but needs to reach the total funding goal of $21 million to begin construction.
The project is gathering momentum, having already raised $6.5 million through donations, grants, and support from board members, including a recent $1 million challenge grant from a veteran donor. The legacy of Tun Tavern extends to being a cornerstone of early Americana, where community, commerce, and camaraderie flourished.
