Plans are underway to revitalize the Laurel Little Theatre, enhancing the experience for both performers and audiences alike. Originally constructed in 1927 and converted into a theater in the early 1970s, the facility has a rich history in the community.
Board President Christy Liverett highlighted the importance of the theater, noting its historical significance along with others in the area, such as the Arabian and the Strand movie theaters. The Laurel Little Theatre was the last to close, making its revitalization even more crucial for local culture.
A fundraising initiative known as the “Raise the Roof Capital Campaign,” which began in 2008, aims to expand the facility into an adjacent lot that once housed the Pinehurst Hotel. This development will not only modernize the building but also reintroduce historical entrance features that connected the hotel to the theater.
In addition to the proposed expansion, the theater’s renovation plans address the need for updated amenities such as storage, dressing rooms, and restrooms, which currently utilize the original plumbing from the building’s construction.
The board hopes that by revitalizing the Laurel Little Theatre, it can attract a diverse array of performances, including concerts, ballet, and cultural events, benefiting not just Laurel but the surrounding communities as well. Currently, they have achieved 25% of their financial goal for the project.
This project represents a commitment to preserving local culture and enhancing community engagement through the arts. By coming together to support the theater, residents can look forward to a vibrant cultural hub that celebrates creativity and the performing arts.
To contribute to this vital endeavor, donations are welcomed, and the community is encouraged to play a role in bringing new life to this cherished venue.
In summary, the efforts to revitalize the Laurel Little Theatre will not only preserve a historical landmark but also promote a diverse cultural experience for the community.
