The Mata ni Tikina Tavua Ratu Ovini Bokini has urgently called for the revitalization of traditional coastal monitoring systems following a significant drug seizure in Vatia waters last Friday. Highlighting the pressing need for enhanced security along the region’s coastline, Ratu Ovini pointed out the vital role played by the iTaukei traditional structure, which consists of sea wardens and qoliqoli committees operating at the tikina (district) level.
These local groups are specifically tasked with overseeing their traditional fishing areas (qoliqoli) and monitoring any unusual activities. However, Ratu Ovini noted that many of these committees have been inactive for a considerable time, leading to gaps in coastal security. He emphasized that a focused effort is essential at both the village and tikina levels to rebuild the capacity of these groups.
“This revitalization should empower them to identify and report suspicious drug-related activities,” he stated. Ratu Ovini underscored the importance of local knowledge for effective border security, especially in light of the significant drug bust, which involved over 100 sacks of suspected cocaine and led to the arrest of six people, including four foreign nationals from Ecuador and two locals.
Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu confirmed that the operation was a joint effort involving officers from various departments, including the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Serious Organised Crime and Intelligence Department (SOCID). He highlighted that this successful raid stemmed from a collaboration between local and international law enforcement agencies. Investigations into the shipment and the individuals in custody are currently ongoing.
The call for revitalizing traditional monitoring systems presents an opportunity for communities to reclaim control over their coastal resources while contributing to the safety and security of their regions. Strengthening these local structures could lead to more resilient coastal management practices, ensuring that such drug-related incidents are identified and addressed proactively in the future.
