Construction of a significant 13-story apartment tower in Columbus began in November 1976, marking the beginning of the ambitious Mt. Vernon Plaza project. This urban renewal initiative spanned 26 acres on the Near East Side, featuring 226 residential units, 150 townhouses, and a 30-store shopping area.
The project was strategically framed by Atcheson Street to the north, North 20th Street to the east, Mt. Vernon Avenue to the south, and Monroe Avenue to the west. At the center of Mt. Vernon Plaza was an amphitheater adorned with benches and sculptures, which served as the venue for President Jimmy Carter’s dedication speech on September 23, 1978. The event attracted thousands of local residents eager to witness the completion of a long-awaited community revitalization.
Plans for the plaza commenced as early as 1970 when the Columbus Department of Development pursued a catalyst grant to enhance the Bolivar Arms Urban Renewal Project. Through consultations with community members, it was determined that local needs included a shopping center and improved housing options for low-income families. The city appointed the Neighborhood Development Corporation to spearhead the development, securing necessary funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
To facilitate this transformation, the city utilized eminent domain, resulting in the relocation of approximately 200 residents and business owners along Mt. Vernon Avenue. Despite facing numerous challenges and delays that led to skepticism about the project’s completion, the dedication ceremony showcased the completed apartment building with a message reading: “Out of the Past a Brilliant New Future,” symbolizing the community’s aspirations for revitalization.
Unfortunately, despite the initial enthusiasm and investment, Mt. Vernon Plaza never fully reached its anticipated potential, leaving many of those hopes unfulfilled. Nevertheless, the project remains a testament to the city’s commitment to urban renewal and development, highlighting the ongoing challenges and possibilities for growth in urban communities.
This article serves as a reminder of the importance of community input in development plans, as well as the complexities involved in urban renewal projects. While not all initiatives achieve their initial goals, they can inspire future efforts aimed at improving residents’ quality of life and fostering community resilience.
